Dental emergency?

Toothache at 9 pm? Here's what to do.

Pick what's happening for first-aid steps and how soon you need to be seen. Then call us: we keep same-day slots open for emergencies every weekday.

Come in within 30 – 60 minutes

  1. 1Pick the tooth up by the crown (the white part), never the root.
  2. 2If it's dirty, rinse it gently with milk or water. Don't scrub it.
  3. 3Try to push it back into the socket and bite on a clean cloth. If you can't, keep it in a cup of milk.
  4. 4Call us now. A tooth saved within an hour has the best chance.

Same-day appointment

  1. 1Rinse with warm salt water (½ teaspoon salt in a glass of water).
  2. 2Floss gently around the tooth in case food is trapped.
  3. 3Take an over-the-counter pain reliever as directed on the pack.
  4. 4Hold a cold pack on your cheek, 15 minutes on and 15 off. Never put aspirin on the gum.

Same or next day

  1. 1Save any pieces in milk or a damp cloth.
  2. 2Rinse your mouth with warm water.
  3. 3Cover sharp edges with sugar-free gum or dental wax from a pharmacy.
  4. 4Use a cold pack to reduce swelling and avoid chewing on that side.

Same day. ER if it spreads

  1. 1Call us straight away: infections need treatment, not just painkillers.
  2. 2Rinse with warm salt water several times a day. Don't try to pop a gum boil.
  3. 3Go to the emergency room if swelling spreads to your eye or neck, or you have a fever or trouble breathing or swallowing.

Within a few days

  1. 1Keep the crown somewhere safe and bring it with you.
  2. 2Pharmacy dental cement can hold a crown temporarily. Don't use superglue.
  3. 3Avoid very hot, cold or sticky food on that side until we see you.

Call if it hasn't slowed in an hour

  1. 1Bite firmly on folded gauze, or a damp black tea bag, for 30 minutes.
  2. 2Sit upright and rest. Don't rinse, spit or use a straw for 24 hours.
  3. 3Some oozing is normal for a day. Steady bleeding after an hour of pressure needs a call.

"Chipped a front tooth on a Friday morning and walked out that afternoon with it fixed. You couldn't tell anything happened."

NPNadia P.Emergency visit
